Job Description
The Surgical Training Specialist is a subject matter expert in surgical procedures applicable to biomedical research. They are responsible for providing comprehensive surgical training and development to a diverse audience, ensuring adherence to industry standards and fostering innovation in surgical
techniques and technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducts comprehensive training sessions in various surgical procedures, including basic, advanced, and specialized techniques relevant to biomedical research.

  • Documents and evaluates the effectiveness of training sessions, ensuring alignment with industry best practices.

  • Mentors and nurtures the professional growth of other surgical trainers, fostering a skilled and cohesive training team.

  • Reviews and enhances the surgical training curriculum regularly, ensuring it reflects the latest advancements and industry standards.

  • Executes basic, advanced and specialty surgical procedures for training purposes and contributes to the refinement and development of techniques.

  • Acts as a subject matter expert, providing guidance and collaborating with staff and researchers on optimal surgical practices and equipment.

  • Performs pre- and post-operative assessments, administers anesthesia and monitors anesthetic depth.

  • Maintains all records and databases meticulously and accurately including but not limited to surgical and training records.

  • Evaluate emerging surgical technologies and techniques, assessing their applicability and feasibility within the research environment. Implement successful innovations for training purposes or research enhancement.

  • Initiates the development and improvement of surgical technologies and methodologies, addressing the evolving needs of biomedical research.

  • Conducts pilot studies to assess and refine innovative surgical approaches, collaborating with management for wider dissemination.

  • Collaborates closely with researchers to develop and refine surgical techniques aligned with research objectives.

  • Collaborate with internal researchers to identify gaps in surgical techniques, actively contributing to ongoing research projects or initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven proficiency in training others in aseptic surgical procedures on mice, including microscopic surgical techniques.

  • Extensive understanding and experience in a broad spectrum of mouse surgical procedures and perioperative techniques.

  • Demonstrated capacity to take initiative, solve surgical issues, and exercise sound judgment in decision-making.

  • Strong attention to detail coupled with adaptability in teaching methodologies to accommodate varying skill levels and learning styles.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to engage with individuals from diverse disciplines, fostering clear and productive exchanges.

  • Confident and responsible handling of animals along with proficiency in various biomethods.

  • Proficiency in using computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook for documentation and communication purposes.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, demonstrating proficiency in understanding and contributing to ongoing research projects related to surgical techniques and innovations.

  • Ability to critically analyze and innovate surgical techniques and equipment, evaluating their efficacy and potential impact.

  • Strong networking skills to establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, both internal and external, fostering collaborations and partnerships for research and innovation endeavors.

Educational: High School required/Bachelor's preferred

Experience: 4 -6 years preferred

Certification preferred: The Surgical Training and Innovation Specialist is provided with support and encouraged to pursue certifications through the Academy of Surgical Research (SRT, SRS) and the American Association of
Laboratory Animal Science (ALAT, LAT, LATG).
